Safe and frequent pedestrian crossings are necessary in towns and cities to support a walkable environment. They shape pedestrian’s behaviour and guide them towards the safest possible route. The right lighting is key to make people crossing the passage visible and reduce pedestrian fatalities at night.
Schréder has a long history in developing dedicated optics for pedestrian crossing lighting that meet the CIE recommendations and guidelines.

Peddestrian test

Our LED lighting solutions ensure safety for both motorists and pedestrians to help them share the public space in a safer manner. They:

  • ensure that the pedestrian crossing is highly visible and clearly distinguish from its surroundings;

  • provide the necessary vertical illuminance so drivers can clearly see pedestrians crossing the road;

  • deliver high uniformity on the pedestrian crossing to encourage people to use the infrastructure and cross the road in safety and comfort;

  • minimise glare for drivers and pedestrians;

  • reduce costs thanks to a low energy consumption and robust materials which guarantee a long lifespan.
Schréder pedestrian crossing lighting solutions deliver the vertical and horizontal illuminance to ensure safety for all

Key concepts for lighting pedestrian crossings

Horizontal and Vertical illuminance

Horizontal illuminance enables the pedestrian to see the road markings and to use the pedestrian crossing correctly.

As a driver’s attention is naturally focused about 100 metres ahead, at an angle of about 5° in urban areas, it is critical that he/she quickly perceives the pedestrian. Vertical illuminance on the pedestrian enables the driver to see the pedestrian and react accordingly. At 50 km/h, an average driver needs about 43 metres to stop.

Pedestrian crossings need lighting that provides a strong contrast with the road lighting

A distinct colour contrast

The contrast created by a different colour temperature from the surrounding road lighting is an effective way to highlight the pedestrian crossing and attract drivers’ attention.
This can be achieved by using white LEDs with a different colour temperature.

Schréder has lighting solutions for all possible pedestrian crossing configurations to ensure safety

Lighting for typical pedestrian crossing configurations

Depending on your infrastructure, we can provide various lighting solutions to meet the needs of your pedestrian crossings.

One-way traffic

A single luminaire is able to light a pedestrian crossing for a one or two lane road, or a wide road including a bicycle track.

One-way traffic - 3 lane road

A second luminaire will be necessary on the opposite side of the road.

Two-way traffic - 4 lane road

Two luminaires are necessary to create a positive contrast for traffic in both directions.
