Armadale Line Transformation

Sustainable lighting for Perth’s upgraded transport corridor

As part of Western Australia’s major transport infrastructure program, METRONET and the Public Transport Authority (PTA) upgraded the Armadale rail line to remove level crossings and improve safety, accessibility and connectivity. This is one of the most significant upgrades in the 130-year history of the Armadale rail line.

New elevated stations were built at Carlisle, Oats Street, Queens Park, Cannington and Beckenham, separating road and rail traffic and improving safety and traffic flow.

The reclaimed land beneath the elevated rail corridor has been transformed into Long Park, a vibrant community space featuring shared pedestrian and cycling paths, recreational facilities, and public gathering areas.

Lighting was a critical element of the project, ensuring that the stations and surrounding public spaces remain safe, accessible and welcoming after dark while meeting the PTA’s strict performance and longevity requirements.

Sustainable lighting to ensure safety and well-being

WSP was commissioned to design a lighting strategy that balances aesthetic integration with technical performance for the stations and the surrounding public spaces. A range of Austube Schréder and Schréder luminaires were selected, including the RHINO 80 SQUARE, SKYLINE FLEX 1515TB, OMNISTAR KIT and VALINTA.

These luminaires provide highly uniform lighting across station platforms, pedestrian pathways and the public realm, ensuring high visibility and comfort, which is essential for a people-centric space, while complementing the precinct's architectural design.

To meet the PTA’s infrastructure standards, all luminaires were required to achieve a minimum performance specification of L90/B10 at 50,000 hours. This means that, after 50,000 hours, at least 90% of the initial light output will be maintained, with no more than 10% of the luminaires failing to meet this threshold. This standard ensures long-term reliability and minimal environmental impact.

The selected solutions exceed this requirement, delivering a long operational life and reduced maintenance interventions. This ensures that the environment remains consistently welcoming with minimal disruption to daily life.

From Infrastructure to Community Asset

The new lighting scheme demonstrates how thoughtful design creates long-lasting value. By combining durable lighting infrastructure with architectural solutions, the installation has transformed the corridor into a secure and inviting space for commuters and local residents alike.

Passengers, pedestrians and cyclists now interact with an area characterised by high-quality, energy-efficient lighting, which improves visibility and promotes safety and social inclusion.

Ultimately, this project shows that designing infrastructure with the human experience at its core fosters vibrant, resilient community spaces that endure.
