Al Raugh Tunnel

The Al Raugh Tunnel is part of a major infrastructure project on the Sharjah–Khor Fakkan Road. It was designed to reduce travel time between Sharjah and the eastern coastal city of Khor Fakkan. Carved through the rugged Hajar Mountains, it is one of 5 tunnels providing a direct route that bypasses the older, winding mountain passes.
 

Designed to ensure a safe and easy transition

For drivers transitioning from the intense desert sun to the tunnel, the right tunnel lighting was critical for visual comfort and safety. The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA), which manages the operations and maintenance of the tunnel, required a high-performance, energy-efficient lighting solution capable of withstanding the high vibrations and high temperatures of the Hajar Mountains. To meet these rigorous demands, we implemented a solution featuring the GL2 COMPACT and TFLEX COMBI for this 1.3km-long tunnel.
 

Tunnel entrance lighting for smooth driving experience 

Just over 400 TFLEX COMBI luminaires were installed at the tunnel entrances to meet luminance requirements and provide the critical boost lighting to avoid the 'black hole effect'. It delivers a high light output to ensure that drivers entering the tunnel have a clear view and experience no visual discomfort as their eyes adapt from the bright external environment.
 

Excellent visibility for enhanced safety 

The GL2 COMPACT was chosen to light the interior zone. Installed in two continuous lines, this high-performing luminaire delivers a highly uniform lighting on the walls and roads, enabling drivers to easily and quickly identify any potential obstacles.

Fitted with the latest generation of LEDs, it provides a bright white light for high visual guidance while consuming little energy. The long life of the LEDs combined with the robust design (IP 66 / IK 08) means that despite the harsh tunnel environment, the luminaires will continue to deliver this high performance for many years and will require little maintenance.
 

Modern lighting for sustainable infrastructure

Designed for a capacity of 40,000 vehicles per day, the LED lighting has created a safe, comfortable and sustainable tunnel for one of the UAE’s vital mountain transit corridors by:

• ensuring smooth traffic flow on this busy highway;
• increasing operational performance and minimising disruptions;
• reducing energy and maintenance costs.
