LeuzArena

High-performance sports lighting perfectly aligned with the sustainable vision of this regenerated industrial site

The LeuzArena in Leuze-en-Hainaut sets the standard for sustainable, multi-purpose sports facilities. Opened in 2016, LeuzArena was built on the regenerated ‘Motte’ industrial site, a former hosiery factory. Following an extension in 2022, the sports complex now boasts 5,000 m² of facilities designed to accommodate a wide variety of sporting disciplines. Open to athletes of all levels, it hosts weekly training sessions, courses, group classes and competitions, thereby revitalising sport in the local area.

LED lighting to reflect their commitment to sustainability

The management's commitment to sustainability naturally led them to replace the original discharge lamps in the multi-sports hall with LED lighting. Their objectives were clear:

  • replace the outdated lighting with a more modern and efficient LED solution;
  • reduce energy consumption;
  • ensure the illuminance levels required for various sports and TV broadcasting (1,000 lux);
  • enable smart management to adapt lighting to the time of day and specific use.

The management tasked us with proposing a sports lighting solution to meet their requirements. Our design office carried out a photometric study based on the Infrasport standards for basketball and TV broadcasting requirements.

Based on this study, we proposed 43 INDU BAY LED luminaires. This high-efficacy solution significantly reduces energy consumption while delivering precisely the right amount of light where and when it is needed. Its tailored photometric distribution optimises uniformity across the court and ensures minimal glare.

The new LED lighting delivers the following illuminance levels, taking into account a maintenance factor of 0.9:

  • 1,064 lux on the centre court with 97% uniformity;
  • 1,041 lux across the entire hall with 73% uniformity.

The luminaires guarantee the required 1,000 lux across the entire hall, meeting the standards necessary for hosting top-level competitions and TV broadcasts. It also provides a high level of uniformity and low glare for players and spectators, ensuring their comfort.

Furthermore, LeuzArena is now achieving energy savings of 55.5% thanks to the 43 INDU BAY luminaires (183W) which replaced the 49 old HID fixtures (316W). This represents an annual financial saving of €7,944.

Simplified lighting management and customisable scenarios

To optimise the lighting according to real-time needs, the management wanted a control system that was both effective and simple to use. They wanted to adjust the light intensity according to the activity and time of day. Specifically, they needed the option to dim the light and divide the room into three sections.

We proposed our Schréder ITERRA wireless management system, which enables easy control of each luminaire. To make the system more user-friendly, we created several scenarios based on their requirements and configured them within the Schréder ITERRA management platform, for example:

  • training: dimming the lights to achieve an illuminance level of 350 lux.
  • TV broadcasting: 1,000 lux;
  • boxing galas: ring lighting at 100% and dimmed perimeter lighting to provide an immersive experience;
  • overcast days with partial natural light: providing an additional 250 lux of light.

As the managers wanted maximum flexibility to control the lighting system, we advised them to opt for 'individual' control mode. Unlike 'broadcast' mode, which involves controlling up to 30 luminaires simultaneously via a single control unit, this system uses one control unit for every eight luminaires, allowing individual interaction with each luminaire. This flexibility in lighting control enables them to divide the room into zones, adjust the lighting intensity, and set different dimming levels in various areas of the room. They can also choose to illuminate only the area in use.

Previously, they were obliged to light the entire room regardless of its use. With this adaptable lighting, they only illuminate where necessary and at an appropriate level for the activity taking place. They thus avoid wasting energy and reduce their energy bill further.

Our team installed this lighting control app on various tablets located throughout the centre. As the managers wanted these basic lighting scenes to be accessible to everyone, we added a ‘Dynamic Switch’ that activates the pre-programmed scenes with the push of a button.

We have also trained the managers in how to use the lighting management platform fully. As the platform is intuitive and scalable, the managers can now create or adapt scenarios as required.

Delivering results through dialogue and flexibility

The success of this project hinged on the close collaboration between our team, the LeuzArena managers and the installer, Wanty. Through discussions with the sports complex managers, we gained a detailed understanding of the context, enabling us to design a bespoke solution that meets the technical requirements and is suited to the wide range of sporting activities held in the multi-purpose hall. The solution is also easy to use.

Thanks to the smooth coordination with the installer, it was possible to meet the extremely tight installation deadlines. The new lighting had to be operational in time for the Belgian Table Tennis Championships, a flagship event showcasing the country’s best players, including the Belgian Masters and TT Handisport, on 22nd and 23rd March 2025.

The flexibility of the Schréder and Wanty teams also enabled us to address a particular concern of the organisers: ensuring business continuity during the installation of the new lighting. A temporary HID/LED solution was provided throughout the works to ensure that sporting activities were never interrupted, whether during the day or in the evening.

Our expertise in sports lighting and control systems allowed us to deliver an optimal, scalable and user-friendly solution that enables LeuzArena to provide an enhanced experience for athletes and spectators alike.
