Hoërskool Stellenbosch astro hockey pitch
Future-ready smart lighting enhances the player experience while reducing operating costs
Hoërskool Stellenbosch is a public, co-educational Afrikaans public school in the Western Cape. Sport plays a significant role in school life, and the school recognises its important contribution to learning and community building.
It offers a wide range of sports and has recently upgraded its astro hockey pitch. Having previously collaborated with us on its athletics track, the school asked us to develop an effective and reliable floodlighting solution tailored to its sporting needs.
Sports lighting designed around the needs of players
To meet the project requirements, we supplied OMNIBLAST LED floodlights, delivering high-performance lighting with excellent glare control. Their modular optical design directs light precisely where it is needed, providing high visibility, uniformity and visual comfort.
Students and coaches can now enjoy late-afternoon or evening training sessions without experiencing any harsh glare or dark zones. The improved visual conditions support safety, reduce eye strain and help players perform at their best throughout the year.
Flexible control without costly infrastructure
The floodlights are controlled by Schréder ITERRA, a wireless lighting control solution using DMX drivers, providing the school with a robust, cost-effective, and future-ready platform.
Its wireless node technology creates a secure mesh network between the floodlights, enabling them to communicate across the installation without the need for extensive control cabling.
For the school, this meant avoiding costly and disruptive trenching across the grounds while gaining a reliable and scalable lighting control system that is easier to maintain.
The right light for every sporting activity
Each floodlight or group of floodlights can be individually addressed using DMX control technology, allowing lighting levels to be precisely adjusted for different activities and requirements.
This allows lighting levels to be quickly adapted for training sessions, matches, broadcast requirements or special events. Fast refresh rates and synchronised switching also ensure reliable performance across the entire field.
This flexibility means the school can use its sports facilities more efficiently while maximising energy savings.
Simple control, wherever it is needed
Schréder ITERRA is operated through a mobile app with an intuitive interface, allowing school staff to control the lighting easily. Via a gateway device, the system can also be managed remotely.
The floodlights can be dimmed for training, increased for matches or switched off remotely when no longer needed. Combined with energy-efficient LED technology, this helps the school use only the light it needs, when it needs it, while reducing electricity consumption and operating costs.
