La Mata coastal footpath

Connected lighting enhances safety for people while preserving nature along this coastal promenade

The La Mata footpath is one of the most attractive routes along the Torrevieja coastline. Running alongside the Mediterranean Sea, this promenade connects different areas of La Mata and passes through places of outstanding natural and scenic beauty.

In 2024, the footpath was renovated to enhance safety and its integration into the surrounding environment. Lighting plays a key role in improving the experience for people after dark. The local authorities wanted an energy-efficient solution that would respect the natural beauty of the Mediterranean coastline.

They opted for a connected lighting system with motion sensors that adapt the lighting to people's needs while optimising energy consumption.

Coastal pathway lighting designed to respect nature

Lighting coastal areas requires a specific approach to respect the surrounding natural environment. A total of 87 FLEXIA FG MIDI luminaires with two different types of brackets were installed to suit the design and characteristics of the different sections of the promenade. The combination of EVENS and SOFIA brackets ensures that the lighting integrates with the landscape, maintaining visual consistency along the entire route.

The luminaires deliver a warm white light (2,200K), creating a pleasant atmosphere and gently guiding people along the promenade. DarkSky Approved, the luminaires limit light spill, helping to preserve the natural darkness of the coastal setting and reduce potential impacts on local wildlife, including marine life.

Connected lighting that adapts to people's needs

The new installation goes beyond simply providing light. Motion sensors enable the lighting to respond to people's activity, providing the necessary light when it is needed. This flexibility helps to optimise system performance and reduce energy consumption.

Schréder EXEDRA enables the local authorities to remotely monitor and manage the luminaires, giving them greater control over their lighting network.

By combining lighting expertise with connected technology, the solution provides Torrevieja with a flexible lighting infrastructure that responds to the needs of the space and the people who use it.

Balancing people's needs with environmental protection

The La Mata footpath demonstrates how connected lighting can improve the experience of public spaces after dark whilst respecting the surrounding environment. By combining warm, carefully directed light with motion sensors and remote management, the solution helps the municipality provide comfortable lighting when needed, optimise energy consumption and limit unwanted light spill in this sensitive coastal setting.
