Smart Wloclawek

Smart lighting solution provides safer roads while saving energy and money

While Wloclawek is one of the oldest cities in Poland, with many historical monuments, museums and parks, the local authorities are looking to the future to build a smart, sustainable and inclusive city. They are implementing a series of initiatives to improve public infrastructure and services and consequently enhance the reputation of the city as an attractive place to live, work, visit and invest.

As part of the city’s action plan, the local authorities decided to convert the public lighting throughout the city with the most up-to-date technology.

Security after dark

Ensuring security for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers is vital all year long. By switching to LED luminaires, the city would significantly improve the quality of light on its roads by providing a brighter white light that enhances visibility especially at critical junctions and pedestrian crossings. More energy efficient and with a longer life span than conventional lamps, they will also reduce power consumption.

Actionable data

The local authorities wanted a smart lighting system that would enable them to:

  • reduce energy consumption further and ultimately its carbon footprint;
  • anticipate any potential failures to optimise maintenance and minimise disruption for drivers;
  • monitor the lighting to track progress.

As the city is setting targets to reduce energy consumption and become carbon-neutral, it is critical to obtain real data so that it can adapt the street lighting network in the future based on actual use, refine its strategy and meet objectives.

Smart lighting solution

After looking for a partner who could provide a solution to match all their requirements and accompany them in the future, the local authorities opted for IZYLUM luminaires controlled by the Schréder EXEDRA control system.

The highly efficient and cost-effective IZYLUM has increased visibility, colour perception and comfort for all road users while reducing the power consumption by 40%. Furthermore, it directs the light onto the road so there is less light spill, protecting fauna and flora along the sides of the road and the night sky.

Controlled by Schréder EXEDRA, the IZYLUM luminaires will be dimmed during the night when traffic is extremely low, cutting energy consumption even further. It will give local authorities more accurate information on power usage so that they can refine their lighting strategy in the coming years.

It also notifies the council of any defect so that they can diagnose the problem from their desk and share the information with technicians so that they are fully prepared when they go on-site for any maintenance interventions.

Safer, smarter and more sustainable roads

Over 2,400 energy-saving IZYLUM luminaires have been converted on the existing poles to minimise costs and disruption.

The local authorities are very happy with the new lighting network which has improved safety on roads throughout the city while enabling them to improve operational efficiencies, reduce costs and achieve sustainability goals

In the future, they will be able to integrate and control other smart street assets such as IoT sensors, cameras, and even access points to make everyday life easier and better for the people who live and work in the city, while maximising resources.
