Youth Entertainment Space
Lighting enhances safety and ambiance, extending activities after dark and encouraging community interaction
The City of Gosnells transformed Sutherlands Park into the vibrant Youth Entertainment Space (YES) in close collaboration with local young people. This all-weather area features an outdoor asphalt pump track, a split-level covered skate park, a multi-purpose sports zone and a social gathering area with tiered seating.
To enable year-round use and enhance community engagement in the evenings, we delivered a dynamic lighting solution that provides performance, colour and creativity, making the space safer, more inviting and better connected to local events.
Lighting design to ensure safety and ambiance
As the local authorities wanted a visually engaging lighting solution that would ensure safety while encouraging creativity and community expression, we proposed a lighting design with immersive RGBW effects.
A total of 17 VALINTA GROOVE luminaires were installed to deliver 100 lux across the pump track, meeting AS2560 BMX lighting standards for use with BMX bikes, mountain bikes and scooters. These energy-efficient luminaires, equipped with neutral white LEDs (4,000K), deliver a highly uniform lighting to ensure excellent visibility after dark.
Just over 140 metres of the RHINO linear floodlight were installed in the shelter's structure, making it the first entirely undercover youth plaza in metropolitan Perth, which allows the facility to be used all year long. The floodlights have full RGBW capability and are controlled by the DMX protocol to create dynamic light shows and pre-programmed scenarios according to events or seasons. The floodlights enhance the identity of the space and create a vibrant night-time ambiance.
Shared expertise for successful project delivery
While the project presented some challenges aligning the luminaires with the column spacing constraints and ensuring a good DMX integration to achieve aesthetic and performance, requirements, we worked in perfect collaboration with Ertech and NDY to deliver the project without compromising on efficiency or durability.
Transformed community space
The Sutherlands Park demonstrates the transformative power of well-designed lighting on community infrastructure. By improving visibility and integrating dynamic controls, the space has become a safe, enjoyable and inclusive destination where the local community can practise sport and interact after dark.
