TotalEnergies Polymers
Sustainable, standard-compliant industrial lighting to ensure workers’ safety and comfort
TotalEnergies is a leading player in the energy sector, employing 1,800 people across its sites in the Port of Antwerp. One of these sites is TotalEnergies Polymers (TEPA), which produces high-quality polymers.
Since its foundation in 1968, TEPA has remained steadfast in its mission to produce and supply increasingly reliable and clean energy. Committed to minimising its environmental impact, TEPA earned ISCC certification in 2014 by adhering to a rigorous global sustainability standard.
This dedication to energy and environmental performance led TEPA to overhaul its obsolete industrial lighting systems at the Antwerp site. Beyond the clear environmental benefits, the project was designed to meet four key objectives:
- enhance safety across both indoor and outdoor site areas;
- improve visual comfort to support the well-being of our staff;
- drive energy savings by switching to high-performance LED technology;
- reduce maintenance costs in both the short and long term.
To achieve these objectives, TEPA drew on the expertise of Schréder to modernise the lighting infrastructure at the Contractorpark, the lorry park and the mechanical workshop.
A meticulous lighting study for tangible results
As every industrial site has its own specific characteristics, we began with an in-depth photometric study to determine precisely which lighting solutions and configurations would best serve TEPA’s operational needs.
The TEPA Contractorpark is a diverse outdoor environment comprising offices, workshops, and workspaces where subcontractors can store and organise materials while working on site. In such a busy area, high visibility is essential to ensure safety.
To meet these requirements, the AMPERA luminaire was chosen for its exceptional robustness and ease of use. Approximately 100 luminaires, equipped with neutral white LEDs, were installed throughout the site and along its various access routes. In addition, 2x2 OMNISTAR KITs, were mounted on two existing poles near the lorry park to complete the system.
This new LED infrastructure provides an average illuminance of 20 lux, a uniformity of 0.25, and a CRI of 70. By significantly reducing dark spots, the system ensures optimal visibility and enhances safety for pedestrians and drivers.
Optimal lighting in compliance with the EN 12464 standard
The EN 12464 standard is the benchmark for indoor industrial lighting. It provides a framework of measures designed to safeguard the safety, comfort, and productivity of personnel while optimising the energy efficiency of lighting installations.
As the lighting in the mechanical workshop had become outdated, management sought a modern, energy-efficient replacement. Given the ceiling height and existing mounting infrastructure, the project required a solution that guaranteed precise light distribution, ensuring the necessary illuminance levels to foster visual comfort and maintain a high standard of workplace safety.
To meet these objectives, we installed 18 INDU BAY industrial luminaires. These were selected for their long-term reliability, minimal energy consumption, and significantly reduced maintenance requirements.
Equipped with 640 neutral white LEDs and a power output of 210W, these luminaires deliver an average illuminance of 1,475 lux (781 lux when dimmed), achieving a uniformity of 0.54 and a CRI of 80. The new system fully complies with EN 12464, providing an ideal environment for precision tasks and preventing eye strain.
A lighting management system to maximise energy savings
The INDU BAY luminaires are managed by a DALI control system to further optimise energy management. This solution offers the significant advantage of seamless connectivity with existing control switches. This flexibility allows site managers to activate or deactivate groups of luminaires based on real-time workshop activity, ensuring energy consumption is precisely aligned with operational needs.
