The Ampera improves safety and reduces energy costs for this motorway surrounding the capital city and some other small towns

The Brussels ring road has the highest traffic density in Belgium as commuters travel in and out of the capital city and vehicles transit from the coast to mainland Europe. It carries traffic flows of up to 200,000 vehicles per day.

As this motorway was mainly lit by luminaires equipped with low-pressure sodium lamps, the Ministry of Transport and Mobility (AWV) decided to replace the luminaires as part of an energy efficiency plan. The new lighting had to:

  • Reduce energy consumption
  • Improve safety
  • Respect the M2 lighting criteria of the CIE 115-2010 norm which defines the illumination and uniformity levels
  • Achieve a fast ROI
  • Reduce maintenance operations

Based on the objectives and the layout of the existing poles, they opted for the Ampera, which provides the required illumination (1.5cd/m²) and uniformity (Uo=40 % - UI=70 % - TI max 10) levels.

A total of 490 Ampera Maxi (128 LEDs) were installed on 20m high posts. The new lighting has increased the light levels ensuring perfect visibility and comfort, thus improving safety. Thanks to its superior efficiency, long life and limited maintenance, the Ampera reduces energy consumption and will optimise costs throughout the installation lifetime. The limited routine maintenance will also mean less disruption for drivers.

In addition the Ampera is IoT ready, to enable the AWV to connect the luminaires to an intelligent control system and interact with other platforms.
This is the first large scale deployment of LEDs on a motorway in Belgium and both the AWV and motorists are delighted. Motorists particularly appreciate the improved colour contrast and visibility, even during bad weather conditions. The AWV are delighted with the reduction in operating costs, which is key for managing the dense road network.
