Townline Tunnel - Welland, Ontario

OMNIstar provides visual comfort, uniformity and optimum colour rendition to ensure the safety and well-being of all users in the tunnel while reducing the power consumption by more than 50%

Townline Tunnel is an underwater tunnel that runs under the Welland Canal in Ontario, a canal that enables ships to travel up and down the Niagara Escarpment and bypass Niagara Falls. This 330m long tunnel was built in 1972 and provides a sidewalk for pedestrians, two lanes for vehicular traffic, as well as room for three sets of tracks for rail vehicles. It is composed of 2 tubes and vehicles can travel at a maximum speed of 100km per hour.
The tunnel was lit by 1,400 fixtures equipped with 400W high-pressure sodium lamps that needed to be upgraded to conform to current lighting regulations. Due to the toxic gases which can be trapped in the tunnel at certain times, a robust anti-corrosive lighting solution was needed.
The OMNIstar, with its high-performing photometry which provides high visual comfort, good uniformity and optimum colour rendition, was ideal to ensure the safety and well-being of all users in the tunnel.
A total of 640 OMNIstar luminaires (470W) were installed in the tunnel, enabling the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation to reduce the power consumption by more than 50%. The luminaires are wall mounted and were specifically designed to provide an indirect light to guarantee high visual comfort for all users, especially lorry drivers who are seated higher in their vehicles.
