Rea Vaya, a bus rapid transit system in Johannesburg recently inaugurated the BRT Bridge over the M1 highway. This 255m-long bridge is part of new route by Rea Vaya that forms the backbone of Johannesburg’s Louis Botha Development Corridor, connecting Alexandra not only to central Johannesburg but also to its neighbour, Sandton. This new bridge is not only used by busses; it features a new pedestrian walkway for many people who commute daily between Alexandra and Sandton.
Schréder was entrusted with developing a lighting design that would enable all users to cross the bridge in complete safety and that would create an iconic landmark at night. Citea LED luminaires light the BRT route and the pedestrian walkway, providing a bright white light to ensure perfect visibility and to increase the sentiment of security.
Specially designed LEDbeam and OMNIstar floodlights were installed to illuminate the side rails, cable structure and the top of the bridge. A DMX controller controls the lighting and colours for different dynamic scenarios.
“LED luminaires were the light source of choice, and Schréder was tasked to do the lighting design, and to select the best luminaires for the application. It all came together after the electrical installation by RJJ Projects for an awesome lighting effect”, says Dawid Janse van Vuuren from Royal HaskoningDHV.
Commuters are delighted with the new BRT Bridge, which not only provides a safer and quicker access but is one of the most iconic bridges in Johannesburg.
