From 1907
to nowadays

Jules Schréder started the business in 1907 when electric lighting was bringing the city into the 20th century, making streets safer and illuminating new factories. As the partner of cities worldwide, we develop unique solutions such as traditionally-forged streetlamps to preserve Budapest’s charms, or a “string of pearls” to light The Bund in Shanghai.

In the second half of the century, we refined illumination installations, ensuring we put the right light, in the right place, at the right time. In the age of the motorway, pioneering developments in photometry meant Schréder was called on to light roads across Europe and beyond safely: we helped the aviation boom take off when we lit up Orly Airport in 1960. During this period, Jules’ grandson, Jean, helped expand the business to countries from Chile to China.

New technologies bring change

And in the era of the LED, we developed products which go beyond the basics to show bridges, monuments and natural wonders in their best light. We worked with cities to bring an aesthetic refinement to outdoor lighting, using LEDs in locations as diverse as Brussels’ Grand Place and the historic centre of Cusco, Peru.

The latest wave of urbanism means city centres are becoming more vital than ever: connectivity is crucial.

Our infrastructure and innovative products empower us to bring data to the streets in the same way our founder brought light. Understanding the relationship of people to public space is at the heart of everything we do. With a new generation of the family involved and a dynamic CEO, Schréder brings you expertise in lightability.

Although...

We are a global company, we are local in our approach.

We strive to manufacture closely to the customer, with multiple factories in Europe and beyond. Our sales staff have strong relationships with partners, infrastructure providers and companies. As such, they understand clients’ needs in terms of efficiency, sustainability and budget. We also take care of ecosystems, working to develop lighting solutions that don’t disrupt the environment.
