Originally a cattle market, the “Alex” as it known to the locals, has witnessed profound changes in the past 100 years. It was emblematic as the socialist stamped centre of East Berlin in the 1970s. Today, the square is a major commercial centre and is surrounded by many important structures such as the TV Tower which is the second tallest in Europe and the World Time Clock, a continually rotating installation that shows the time throughout the globe. Alexanderplatz is also a hub for public transport with over half a million people passing through the square every day.
As part of a comprehensive renovation plan for the square, Schréder, in collaboration with a consortium of landscape architects, provided a new lighting scheme. Twenty six Triflex Maxi luminaires on double consoles and twenty seven Triflex Midi luminaires on single consoles are installed. They frame the square, providing a continuous area filled with light.
The Triflex luminaires are fitted with metal halide lamps with a ceramic arc tube (70W and 150W), providing a white light that creates a warm welcoming ambiance at night.

The total power installed is 20kW for the whole square of 22,000m² with an average illuminance of 12 lux.
